Back to New Zealand — Back to basics
After years abroad, Peter returned home drawn by family and the Kiwi way of life. He opened his first store in Ellerslie, Auckland — bringing with him a deep passion for horses, hands-on product knowledge, and a vision to give New Zealand riders access to the best equestrian gear available. From saddles and rugs to boots and bridles, Saddlery Warehouse opened its doors with one simple goal: to be the best equestrian retailer in the country.
Hitting the road — Taking equestrian gear to every corner of NZ
Before expanding into new stores, Saddlery Warehouse took a hands-on approach to reaching riders across the country. Loading up the truck with a full range of equestrian gear, the team hit the road — travelling to local shows, events, and communities throughout New Zealand. It was grassroots retail at its best, and it built a loyal following of riders who knew they could count on us.
Expanding across New Zealand — New stores, New cities
2001 was a landmark year for Saddlery Warehouse. Off the back of growing demand, we opened our second location at Curry's Lane, then quickly followed with new stores in Christchurch and Wellington. What started as a single store in Ellerslie was rapidly becoming a nationwide presence — and we were just getting started.
Going digital — Our first website launches
As the internet boom swept the globe, Saddlery Warehouse embraced the opportunity and launched its first website in 2005. It was an exciting new way to connect with riders beyond our store walls — bringing our range of equestrian gear to customers across New Zealand at the click of a button. A small but significant step into the digital world.
Franchising begins — Growing the family
In 2006, Saddlery Warehouse took a bold step forward by launching its franchising operations. This opened the door to rapid expansion, with new franchise stores opening across New Zealand. A true turning point in the Saddlery Warehouse story.
Going big — Our landmark Albany store opens
In 2008, Saddlery Warehouse took a giant leap forward with the opening of our flagship store in Albany. Combining a full retail experience with our warehouse under one roof, it was unlike anything New Zealand's equestrian scene had seen before. A destination store where riders could browse, touch, and try an enormous range of gear — all in one place.
A decade of growth — 10 stores across New Zealand
By 2010, Saddlery Warehouse had grown to 10 stores spanning both the North and South Islands. What began as a single store in Ellerslie had blossomed into a true nationwide network — bringing quality equestrian gear and expert advice to riders in every corner of the country.
World-class range — Serious retailer, Serious selection
By 2015, Saddlery Warehouse had evolved into a serious equestrian retailer in every sense of the word. Importing directly from major suppliers across the globe, we dramatically expanded our range — onboarding big international brands like Thomas Cook, Aria and Wrangler, alongside our own in-house brands including Vet Direct. With a depth of range that no other New Zealand retailer could match, we had become the go-to destination for riders who demanded the best.
Growing strong — 13 stores nationwide
By 2020, Saddlery Warehouse had cemented its place as New Zealand's largest equestrian retailer, with 13 stores serving riders from Northland to Southland. Through decades of growth, one thing had never changed — our commitment to the equestrian community, with expert staff who live and breathe horses just as much as our customers do.
A new chapter — Fresh website, global ambitions
Today, Saddlery Warehouse continues to go from strength to strength with 13 stores across New Zealand. We've launched our brand new website, making it easier than ever for riders to shop our full range online. And with eyes firmly set on the horizon, we're excited to announce plans to expand into Australia — taking the Saddlery Warehouse experience to riders across the Tasman and beyond.
